Cvoter Survey: Majority of Kashmiri youth vote for 'Azadi'
They ain't thinking of celebrations. Or may be they are. The two government buildings, in the heart of the Srinagar, were set on fire on Saturday after Eid Namaz. The festival that falls after 40 days of rigorous fasting brought no message of love and peace, but definitely gave a view of massive firework exhibition.

Their identity is a major issue for them. There is no stopping for them as violence engulfs the valley with severity. All they are looking for is freedom. No more are they ready to be in clutches of New Delhi and they are making it clear. The recent survey by the CVoter finds out that youth of Kashmir Valley is looking forward to "Purna Swaraj", whereas the reflection of people in Jammu and Laddakh differs from their fellow citizens. Therefore, stone pelting, burning government buildings and total hostility towards any Indian government initiative in last forty days in the valley clearly suggests the mood.

The recent survey research across Jammu and Kashmir and rest of India gives a picture much against the aspiration of Indian political establishment that regards Jammu and Kashmir as an integral part of the Indian Republic. Also, much against the opinion of Indian masses, the survey found out the rising aggression in Kashmir valley is neither militancy nor a conspiracy of Pakistan to take over Kashmir.

Unlike 1987 this time, they surely know what they want. As the demand for independence augments, majority of Kashmiris (66 per cent) think full independence to Jammu and Kashmir as a new nation is the best solution for the Kashmir issue. Also, eight per cent of the Indians will not mind giving up Jammu and Kashmir for lasting peace. But this mood of valley residents is totally shunned by the people of Jammu and Laddakh where only one out of ten want Jammu and Kashmir as a separate nation. On the other hand, people across the state as well as India disdained the very idea of dividing Jammu and Kashmir into three states - Jammu, Kashmir and Laddakh.

As the situation is getting volatile day by day, the hope of peace returning to the valley in near future is also caving in. The jinxed paradise strongly feels that Indian government and politics are making situation worse. Fifty-six per cent of the Kashmiris (valley residents) believe that India is responsible for current problems and as little as 10 per cent blames Pakistan for it. Although in a lesser number, but as huge as one fourth of Jammu residents also blame India for current problems in Kashmir, definitely the reasons may differ from their Kashmiri counterparts. People from rest of India may not agree with it, as 44 per cent of them still hold Pakistan as main culprit.

The outrageous demonstrations in the valley have got strong backing of the separatist leaders. Kashmiris may look willing to take the protest forward under their leadership but majority of them (60 per cent) are not sure if the separatists represent the true aspirations of Kashmiris as most of them feel that leaders like Aasiyeh Andrabi are hypocrites. Another notable point can be, only 41 per cent of the Kashmiris want to be governed by the laws of Sharia.

When asked, if they are willing to be a part of India. Only 15 per cent of the Kashmiris seemed to be interested in it. Those from Jammu didn't agree with Kashmiris, as 76 per cent of people from Jammu would like see Jammu and Kashmir merger in India. Jammu gets a huge support from people of Ladhak (70 per cent) and rest of India (76 per cent) too. There something to cheer for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as he said that his Government is making efforts to create more job opportunities within Jammu and Kashmir, for Kashmiris unemployment (33 per cent) appeared to be the biggest problem in the state followed by Indian interference (32 per cent) and militancy (12 per cent). Whereas majority in rest of India believe that militancy is the most serious issue in the valley.

The military deployment in the valley has long been a bone of deep contention between the Indian govt. and the Kashmiris. Disgruntled inhabitants are making it pretty evident through their raging protest that they may no settle for partial withdrawal of the AFSP (Armed Forces Special Powers) Act or release of detainees. As the protest gets frivolous and casualty rates goes up, the people across the country, jointly, oppose the usage of bullets against protesters. More than 80 per cent people across the nation think Indian forces should not use bullets against unarmed protesters demanding 'Azaadi'.

The methodology, thoughts and perceptions could differ. People may come up with different solutions for Kashmir issue. But one fact that remains constant is that people do care about peace. When the CVoter asked them if they care about violence in the valley, more 90 per cent in Jammu and Kashmir and 70 per cent rest of India replied affirmatively.

The questions answered here may not have any legal sanctity but they surely carry a strong public opinion. It's about time that people from Kashmir should be heard. But are we ready to lend our ears? This remains big question.

CVoter exclusive survey: J&K take on Pak, Militancy and Islam
TSI-CVoter carried out an exclusive survey in Jammu and Kashmir and gauged the opinion of residents on Indian state and her stand, Pakistan, militancy and Islam. The Indian political establishment thinks Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India.

It thinks the unrest in valley is fuelled by elements sheltered across border. But what do the people of Jammu and Kashmir, still reeling under the effect of militancy and counter-insurgency, think?
